Abstract
In response to the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse, NTSB identified 68 similarly vulnerable bridges and recommended warning systems. Roebling Labs responded by developing and deploying vessel collision warning systems on four case-study bridges. The system assigns threat levels to AIS-equipped vessels by combining real-time transponder tracking, trajectory forecasting, and AASHTO impact analysis. The system provides operators information that they can use to reduce life-loss in a collapse scenario by operating traffic gates to evacuate the bridge.
